Time and Place
May 30, 2024 – August 16, 2024
Exhibition Details
Over the years, Nickle Galleries has often turned to the permanent collection of art to put together exhibitions that respond to or provide additional context to concurrent feature exhibitions. Time and Place is just such an exhibition, albeit with a slight delay. The very recent Harry Mitsuo Kiyooka: Artist. Educator. Activist. (guest curated by Mary-Beth Laviolette) gave us a compelling overview of more than seven decades of the artist’s prolific career and showing work from diverse series of work he produced over the years.
In many ways, that exhibition gave us a crash course in the history of modern and contemporary painting in Canada – one that recalls many other painters from this region and across the country. Time and Place provides the opportunity to paintings created in similar moments, responding to aesthetic trends in ways both comparable and diverse.
Organized from the collection of Nickle Galleries, curated by Christine Sowiak
