UPCOMING! Munnings – The War Years
September 18, 2025 – December 6, 2025
Exhibition Details
Nickle Galleries is honoured to be hosting Munnings - The War Years, opening to the public September 18, 2025.
Renowned today as one of England’s finest painters of horses, Sir Alfred Munnings also created more than 40 works of art as part of the Canadian War Memorials Fund.
Commissioned in 1918 to record the activities of the Canadian Cavalry Brigade and the Canadian Forestry Corps, Munnings produced landscapes, portraits, and many paintings featuring horses — all now part of the Canadian War Museum’s Beaverbrook Collection of War Art.
This exceptional exhibition reveals Munnings' powerful legacy, making it possible to more clearly understand Canada's First World War experience. The installation at Nickle Galleries is complemented with important artifacts on loan from The Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians) Regimental Society at The Military Museums of Calgary and the Glenbow Western Research Centre, Libraries and Cultural Resources, University of Calgary. The exhibition is complemented by a rich program of talks, tours an educational exhibition guide and teacher resources.
A travelling exhibition developed by the Canadian War Museum (Ottawa, Canada), in partnership with the Munnings Art Museum (Dedham, UK) and generously supported by The Beaverbrook Canadian Foundation.
