Event Details

Mary Beth Laviolette, curator of Nickle Galleries’s latest exhibition, HARRY MITSUO KIYOOKA – Artist. Educator. Activist (1928 – 2022) will offer an intimate tour of the exhibition and discuss Kiyooka’s 70 year career as a painter, printmaker, instructor and community builder. Kiyooka was, in the best sense of the word, the ultimate ‘middle man’.  Born in Calgary in 1928, a place he would call home for 94 years, Kiyooka served as an important link between an earlier generation of Alberta artists – some in fact his instructors – and the thriving artistic place Calgary has become.

Kiyooka’s abstract period is his best known and will in this Nickle Galleries exhibition – following his death in 2022 – be a major feature of this retrospective at the University of Calgary where he taught for 27 years. Nearly 70 years of art will be celebrated and will cover other lesser known subjects such as his portraiture, early abstract landscapes, his Victim Series (1968-2007) and his life-long preoccupation with Italy and especially La Serenissima: Venice.

Free, everyone welcome

Meet at the entrance to Nickle Galleries, ground floor, Taylor Family Digital Library.
