Event Details

Join gallerist and ADAC President, Deborah Herringer Kiss for an insightful discussion on the work and career of the late Harry Kiyooka in advance of the opening of Nickle Galleries’ blockbuster, HARRY MITSUO KIYOOKA – Artist. Educator. Activist. (1928 – 2022) curated by Mary Beth Laviolette (opens February 1, 2024).

It was widely known that Harry Kiyooka did not trust art dealers. He had had a dealer in the 1970s but then withdrew from the commercial art scene for over 3 decades until he began showing with Deborah Herringer Kiss. Hear more about this special relationship between artist and dealer.

Deborah Herringer Kiss has her Bachelor’s Degree in Art History and also studied Interior Design at Ryerson University and Business Management at the University of Calgary. She has been working in the Calgary visual arts for over 20 years. Before opening the Herringer Kiss Gallery, Deborah was active in the visual arts community working for other galleries, volunteering with the Calgary Artwalk Society and the Triangle Gallery of visual arts (now Contemporary Calgary) where she was a member of the curatorial committee. Deborah has been instrumental in a number of fundraising initiatives for such organizations as The University of Calgary, The Triangle Gallery of Visual Arts, KOAC (Kiyooka Ohe Art Centre), and Contemporary Calgary.  Deborah has volunteered with the Art Dealers Association of Canada Marketing since 2008. She became a Member of the Board of Directors in 2014, was elected Secretary in 2016, Vice President in 2019, and President in November 2022.   In her role with the ADAC, Deborah has organized several Calgary ADAC gallery hops and a nation wide gallery hop to commemorate the 50th Anniversary year of the ADAC.
