Join Mary-Beth Laviolette for a look at and discussion about taking photographs as it was done for over 150 years -without computer technology. Focusing on the Alberta scene since the 1970s with 27 artists and photographers, many still working today, Mary-Beth is the guest curator for Before Digital now on display at the Illingworth Kerr Gallery (Alberta College of Art + Design). Organized by Contemporary Calgary, this 80 work exhibition opens the door on those who have worked with film cameras, know their way around a darkroom and, also engage in more unusual and hybrid means. Many of the photographs Mary-Beth will show were produced during a period when “it was an exciting time in Canada for [fine art] photography and the province was part of the zeitgeist.”
Laviolette is an independent writer and curator.
